If you grew up playing sports, you remember some of the basic safety aspects you were taught. One of the first lessons you learn in baseball is, "Don't throw the ball to someone who isn't looking." An easy way to tell they aren't paying attention? You can see the numbers on the back of their jersey.
From a young age, we learn we need to take more precaution when another person is not looking and further, to look for signals that they weren't paying attention to you. "It's better to be safe than sorry." In the working world, these childhood lessons still apply, (some more directly than others) though the circumstances are different. The difference now is that you can't always tell when someone "isn't looking" because of how fast we're moving or how much time we have to react.
Rail yards and subways use X-Back Hi-Vis garments to provide a safer work environment and to overcome these potential hazards. As most of you know, high visibility clothing helps identify workers within a work zone by providing a contrast to their background. X-Back Hi-Vis garments take this a step further by helping onlookers know when someone's back is turned to them. If you can see the "X", you know they aren't looking in your direction.

The X-back style works outside the Railyard and Subways also. They do a great on job sites where you face extreme traffic hazards, moving machinery or equipment. A forklift driver can only see so much while they're driving around. If they can see the "X" on your back they know you aren't paying attention and they can slow down so they don't cause an accident. In essence, the "X" on your back works the same exact way the numbers did on the back of your jersey growing up. If you can see the "X", you know the person you're looking at isn't paying attention to you.

If you are looking for added safety beyond to your standard Hi-Vis garments, PIP offers a variety of Hi-Vis vests that feature the X-Back, including options with two-tone tape for enhanced daytime visibility. You can step up your comfort level with our PIP X-Back Hi-Vis T-shirts which meets the ANSI 107 Type R Class 2 standard, without the additional layer of a vest.
